Chaired by our Managing Director Mark Lynn, the summit provided an opportunity for the UK’s leading experts to explore some of the properties and aspects of the products that will see NFI increase in importance in the months and years to come.

As the environmental benefits of insulation such as sheep’s wool become better appreciated and their role in whole life carbon reduction realised, it’s important that we also turn our attention to some of the other performance benefits of NFI. In particular, the importance NFI plays in moisture control and the need to use appropriate depths of insulation as illustrated by energy savings.

Rather than a drive for ever greater depths of insulation, we learned from the summit that it’s more important to use an appropriate depth of insulation that best optimises energy savings and minimises condensation risk whilst providing an economic return.

In the case of thermal improvements to existing elements such as walls, such a balance is rarely achieved by using the maximum depth of insulation. In fact, the speakers showed that a layer of insulation as little as 40mm could achieve 80-90% of potential energy savings whilst providing very effective comfort levels and eliminating condensation risks.

We’re looking forward to the next Natural Fibre Insulation Group event in January where it’s planned we will learn how relatively modest amounts of NFI can provide an effective retrofit solution whilst still complying with Part L of the Building Regulations.
